DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

Frustration with McDonald's

McDonald's employees are untrained and misinformed, in my opinion. There's a particular McDonald's in the Wal-Mart where we do a lot of our shopping. The address is: 98TH & GRANT (WALMART #1231)THORNTON, CO 80229(303)451-8658.

At almost every McDonald's we go to, we have to check our order before stepping out before about 50% of the time, it's wrong.

Except the above mentioned Mickey-D's. Approximately 95% of the time, the employees at this McDonald's get our order wrong. Yes, that's almost 100%. They put cheese on my husband's food when he specifically requests no cheese. One time I got a big mac with no meat on it! We've gotten fish sandwiches with tartar sauce slathered on them and we've requested none. It goes on and on and on.

Today, they were just plain lazy.

See, as you know, our Tween can't have gluten. We've gotten to where we order a grilled chicken patty by itself for him, then he slathers ketchup on it. We had been paying for the whole sandwich because we kept being told we couldn't order just the patty. Two weeks ago, Hubby discovered that some McDonald's only charge from $1.22 to $1.39 for just the patty, as opposed to charging $4.?? for the entire sandwich. He's been in this Wal-Mart McDonald's 2 or 3 times since he discovered this little tidbit and has come home paying just $1.?? for the patty, so I know they can do it, and have done it.

We were in the above Mickey D's and I wanted to get Very Hungry Tween Son a grilled chicken patty. I walk up and ask for it. Said there's a special button for it, as told to Hubby the last 2-3 times he went and asked for it. This doofus started charging for the full sandwich. I said, no, just the patty. "Well, I have to charge for the whole sandwich." "No, you don't. My husband's been through this before. You have a special way on your machine to charge for just the grilled chicken patty." He pretended to search, pushing buttons, and sighing exaggeratedly. After he hemmed and hawed for several minutes, I asked for a manager. Not one person in that place had a clue about it! They tried to tell me there was no way they could charge for less than the sandwich. I grabbed my purse and my kid and stormed out of there.

We got a grilled chicken patty at Sonic's drivethrough on the way home. The cost of the wacky pack kid's meal with the grilled chicken patty, apple dippers, apple juice and then a chicken finger sandwich for me was $4.37. Not bad, and not much of an argument.

I hate McDonald's.

Update April 30 2009: I wonder if they have wheat on their grilled chicken patty just like Kentucky Fried Chicken does? He does seem to have a reaction when he eats their patty! Hmm... need to find out.
