DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

8/13: Produce for Sale (Harvest)

This is what we harvested today. Big yellow straightneck squash that I've had my eye on. Two banana peppers (we ate the smaller just to taste it). Tomatoes from yellow pear to golden mama to orange paste to red roma to thai pink. A couple of the red romas were picked a bit too early so they get relegated to a paper bag to further ripen. One cucumber was hiding in the corn bed and the other was the first to show itself in the front beds.

And we've decided to sell some of what we have. For the tomatoes, you can look at our plants and decide which you'd like. You can also help to pick the beans but not required. If you're interested in purchasing some of our home-grown produce, and live in the Thornton, Colorado area, e-mail us for availability and prices at: thorntonwilliamsfamily@yahoo.com a.s.a.p.! No spam mail, please.

There are two striped zucchini that will be ready in a few days, and a big bunch of yellow squash that I just noticed in a volunteer plant in the front (ready in perhaps a week). It'll be a while before the winter squashes are ready (butternut, acorn, spaghetti).

We're keeping the cucumbers for now, and the basil and lettuce bolted so that's no longer for sale. We have several small black beauty eggplant but we'll probably keep those. We love watermelon so we'll also probably keep the sugar babies, although I did notice about 10 more had just started. We'll see. Viki
