DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

Barely remaining, a tree stump here
Aspen and a lonely fir tree
Must go, against our time
Effort, a pick ax and hack saw three

Both the double-trunk quaking aspen and the very dead birds-nest laden fir tree are gone. Doug used some massive energy today, as well as a pick ax, hack saw, and anything else he could get his hands on. After several hours of intense work, one stump grudgingly gave up the roots and ground. Tossed into our main compost pile. The dead parts of the aspen joined it, but the stump and offshoots remain. Hoping it will someday grow up, into a strong healthy tree.

Yardwork. All day. Fun fun. Until Weslee brought down the aerator onto his foot. Out of commission - hoping the doc can see him tomorrow. For that and his ingrown toenail. It's really gross now. Wish he'd stop biting his toenails!

Meeting with two landscapers tomorrow and one on Tuesday - to get estimates for bringing our front yard up to code and getting some major "curb appeal".

Enjoy your connection with nature - it will give you as much or more than you give it! Vikki
