DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

7/20: Garden Pictures

Found this 1 inch gourd in the front yard today in the group that got unlabeled when the fox dug up everything. Research tells me it's a striped green and white ornamental button gourd. Is that right?

Then... we found several more so we got out the waxed paper to place under the gourds. How cute! We understand that once they get 3 inches, they are full size and we should let them dry on the vine. Then what?
We believe the above leaves are to the Mexican X-Top squash. We were puzzled by the white splotches on the leaves so we took them to a nursery to get an opinion. Was told it was powdery mildew. We were doubtful, and came home to look again more closely. It's only on this particular plant (in various places we planted them) and it's a definitive pattern so we're pretty sure it's just the way this squash is supposed to look. No fruit yet. Anybody had experience with these?

These are two different yellow straightneck squashes we found in two different corn beds. Looks like even more about to burst out! Yummy!

This is the first zucchini - how exciting! I wouldn't have seen it if the blossom hadn't been there. It looks like there's other trying to bloom too. Very tasty.
This is a thornless blackberry that we planted in April from a small 2-leafed cell. We aren't sure we'll actually get blackberries this year, but it's growing almost exponentially so we're hoping. These are those humongous blackberries---can't remember the name.
This is a closeup of a cherry tomato - moments before it and a companion were picked and devoured by Doug and I. See the other tomatoes in the foreground? We have to be patient. We also ate two yellow pear tomatoes today.

Here's our baby Black Beauty eggplant. It's about two inches so it has another 2 more inches before I plan to pick it.
Here's the one remaining okra on the one okra plant. There were more on those little nodules you can see on the stem but they suddenly weren't there this morning. Odd.
And finally here are three peppers - the third is hard to see towards the top right.
.
As you can see, today was an exciting day in our garden. Doug noticed a tiny bit of grass growing in that patch he planted a few weeks ago. I nearly stepped on Mr. Frog who was hanging around the corn patch early this morning. We watered both in the morning and the evening because it was 100 degrees! We gave some lettuce to our next door neighbor and harvested two beets and a radish for our salad. The broccoli had gone too far and flowered so besides the millions of bugs in it, it went into the compost. Vikki
p.s. My apologies but moments after I published this posting, we got spammed by that ridiculous porn comment and I can't seem to get it off. Please ignore that "feel good..." comment below. Thanks and again.... apologies. V.
