DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

Sunday Chores

Above is a pic of our new raspberry and strawberry bed. It should get about 6 hours of sun in the summer so I hope that's enough! Just 2 raspberries (for now) and about 14 strawberries. Yummy yummy! Weslee loves strawberries almost as much as he loves carrots and blueberries!

Above is a picture of a seed tape I made this afternoon. Onions - white bunching. Made a lot more seed tapes (carrots, beets, greens, radishes, swiss chard, echinacea and more) because just couldn't find what I wanted, and it's easier to space than doing it in the garden with wind blowing those tiny carrot and herb seeds. It's really easy - take a somewhat thin square of toilet paper (three squares for the grouping of onions above), use washable elmer's glue or a paste made with flour and water, dot it where you want the seed, place the seed, place another sheet of t.p. on top, and let it dry. Easy!

In addition to doing the raspberries and strawberries today, we prepared the 8'x4' bed for soybeans and purple & creme-colored carrots and various onions, and the area we chose for lots of radishes and some swiss chard. Hope it's not too late for onions - take 80-100 days.

I had planned to do those plantings tomorrow but JURY DUTY!!! Arranged for a sitter for Weslee. We have backpacks and lunch boxes to pack but we have to be gone EARLY! Yuck - but must do my civic duty. Gotta get up early so off to bed! Vikki
