DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

Saturday Chores

I didn't sleep at all last night... my toe really hurt (from the chunk missing from yesterday). So I "worked" (mentally) on my garden, and listened to the dog across the street bark all night. Loudly. All night. Endlessly. Bark Bark Bark Bark Bark!

So even though I wasn't good for much today, we got a lot of chores done. I tied up the front yard gourds to guide them away from a hedge, we weeded, used the "claw" to un-compact dirt, collected bulbs for grape hyacinth to plant elsewhere, pruned the tomatoes and corn and much more. Then we made a trip to our favorite nursery, Paulino's, where we bought a couple of red raspberry and lots of herbs. We plan to create an herb bed tomorrow in some tires in our "back 40" (feet!). Just before Doug left to get some clay buster, we looked out our upstairs bedroom window and noticed a robin harvesting our blueberries! He ran down and chased it away (a little late - blueberry splatters) and I grabbed more yellow tulle, twine and scissors. I netted up those berry bushes good but will have to un-net to harvest and then re-net.

No pictures today. Thought I'd post one of Weslee's ingrown toenail but he's traumatized enough! Happy gardening, people. And a shout out (hi!) to friends and family... feel free to post a comment. Vikki
