DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

7/9: Gourds, Mr. Frog, Asparagas, and Landscaping

Gourds on Jun 16 2008
Gourds on July 09 2008
Amazing comparison! So much so that I had to take out
the netting so they wouldn't strangle. The vines are winding
into the "lawn" - hope we won't get in trouble!

Yes, Mr. Frog is still here! He appears to burrow into the sand by the tires of gourds and blueberries. We don't usually see him unless he moves. And he doesn't really care to be sprinkled when I'm watering the garden!

Here's that pic of the surprise asparagas I promised yesterday. You can barely see the teeny just above where I typed the word "Here". But the other is a bit bigger - right above where I typed "... And Here". Note the size against the bean plant. The people who buy our house will have a couple of asparagas in the Spring - can't harvest in 2009 but should be able to in 2010. Lucky people! Could this be a selling point?!?!
.
Another estimate for landscaping - they are ranging from $2500 to $6000. Afraid we can't quite do any of them. Perhaps will have to continue reseeding ourselves, and hope they'll stay off our backs if they see the "lawn" constantly wet. The wonderful code compliance person, same person from last week, dropped by with an excuse for not coming back before now, and here's that information on free soil testing. No comment about all of the work we'd done on the yard. Figures. So I call the number for free soil testing, and lo and behold, it AIN'T FREE!! Surprise surprise surprise!
.
I worked on my book some more. After Doug got home, we did more work on our website. We hope to be up and ready by the first of August. Now, as I type this, we're watching the DVD of "The Secret". Positive thinking and all. Vikki
