DO YOU GARDEN? I am researching a book called "My Very First Garden" (about edible gardening... fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc.) and need your true stories! Do you have a good (or even bad!) memory about the first garden you ever did? Was it inside in pots, outside when you were a kid, or in a community garden? Did you harvest anything or did the rabbits get it all? Please submit your short but true story to vikkibooks at yahoo dot com by April 27 2010. Your submission implies your consent to use your story and the possibility of (minor) editing. Thanks!

7/12: Destruction of Property

Our filbert tree on June 08 2008. Whole and healthy. Happy even!

Unbelievable. I got up early today and was out in the backyard by 6:30 a.m. to water and harvest lettuce for today's lunch. By the time I got out to the front yard it was about 8:00. Within 2 minutes I noticed our beautiful little filbert tree. It was the only nut tree from our planting in Spring that had not only survived but was doing very well. Between 8:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., someone had taken a sharp implement and hacked at our little tree. One little branch of leaves (top right in the above pic) was completely off. Then the tree, which was about 4 feet tall last night, lay split in two - now only about 2 feet tall. Weslee went in for Doug and grabbed his magnifying glass at the same time. It's obvious because there are cuts in other places. False starts, perhaps? After much debating, we decided to call the police - which I did at about 8:50. The officer said someone would be in touch. An hour later, an officer called, and I gave details for the report.

And this is our tree this morning. Branch on mat to left. Cut in the middle. I.D. tag discarded.

Are we being harrassed?

You decide. Because we have.
